95 Sentra Engine Rattle Sign In

Hey all,
I have a rattling/clicking coming from the engine. Almost like a roller coaster. It tends to happen when I'm under acceleration, around 2-3k RPMS (have to guess because there's no tach, but when it's under pressure.) When it shifts up there's still a rattle, it just gets quieter. Seems to not be as bad from a cold start, then gets worse as I drive it more. It's pretty loud on hills too, when the engine shifts down. Seems to be coming from the passenger side of the engine.

Not sure if it has anything to do with it, but the only service I've had done to it was an oil change about two months ago. I did notice the sound about a week after, however it was much quieter then, and has progressively gotten worse.

(link removed - just went to another car repair forum - not allowed)

I know you probably arlready did, but in case you didn't check oil level to start.
I doubt its timing but good to check (10 degress BTDC. for 1.6L DOHC)

Could be timing chain tensioner

They have hydraulic lifters could be one is collapsed, oil gallery plugged is another posiblity

Forien object in cylinder you could pull each plug and check for damage to plugs and (if you can aquire) Camera probe to check cylinders.

If you could narrow down the area where the noise is coming from would help weed out some possibilities... Frt, back, underneath, etc....

Does it do it while sitting there idling or does the car need to be moving???

Re: 95 Sentra Engine Rattle Sign In

Sounds like its coming from the upper left side of the engine, a bit below the valve cover.

It does it very little, if any when at idle, but will start when the engine begins to rev (doesn't matter if it's moving, just that the engine is at a higher rpm) So in nuetral, park, drive, etc, it will always do it.

Seems to climb with the rpm (becomes louder) but it's not consistent, so it won't do it all the time, just most.

Oil is full, never let it get low, so at least we can take that out. I've let a couple mechanics look at it (at a glance, without really digging in) and they all said timing chain, tensioner, something along that lines.

This car has to last me a week, I'll drive it home (1,000 miles) and then I'm done with it, I'm just wanting to make sure/hope that it's nothing critical that'll leave me in the middle of nowhere without an engine...

And in case you haven't noticed, I'm not a mechanic myself (though dang good at body work!) so bear with me!

thanks for the replies!

Without being able to see it and with your description, I would have to agree with the others that took a quick look at it. It does sound like its coming from the timing chain area.....

It's a tough call but if that is the problem and it does go out all the way, that's the spot you'll be stuck in. Plus I'm not sure what "done with in a week" exactly means but if the chain does go there is a very good possibility of doing major engine damage.

More then likely is chain tensioner common problem on 1.6L and 1.8L.
