96 Chevy 1500 ignition issues

96 Chevy 1500 ignition issues Sign In

Having issues with this and not really sure where to look. Initially the truck blows the ignition fuse (under the hood, closest to the steering column, 40 amp) when the key is turned. Problem is intermittent. Had a guy look at it, he said a wire had come loose off the solenoid. Two weeks later same problem. Had it towed to the shop and they found a couple of wires that had bare spots (after having it for four days and 900 dollars later). Said they checked the ignition as well. Two weeks later same thing. Now they are saying it's the key. They say there is a chip in the key that has gone bad and is causing the fuse to blow. They can fix that for 400 bucks. Any ideas? Also, they said the starter and solenoid ate fine.

? Didn't think the trucks used a chip key - try another but that isn't it. You had or have bared wires the fix will be more that fixing the wire but why they could do that at all.


What engine/driveline does this have?

You need to turn around and run away from this car as far as you can. He is an idiot.

Not only is there no way in hell a key transponder can blow a 40A fuse but this truck doesn't even have a transponder.

You have a high current dead short somewhere and you a mechanic with some brains to locate it. It's certainly not this guy.

OK - First - who is going to take this on now -you? Can you remove starter and find out why a wire came loose there as a clue where to begin? If not that's the place I would begin a chance if still all wrong or wires left hanging from replacing it along the way or just removing it and not back on properly caused this now find out if wires to solenoid which is on top of starter are in good shape at all or looking bad with more things rubbing.


These prices mentioned with nothing sure found don't add up blowing a 40 amp fuse as HT said should make quite the show or evidence of why.


Asking you: Does this have a chip key which isn't the real problem IMO if it does. Might be chance - never knew of one that did? More likely something aftermarket or just lousy routing of wiring from some work done before. If not you find the right shop with the right tech. As things go this shouldn't be that hard to find the real trouble,

NO, there is no possibility of a chip key blowing a 40A fuse and NO, this truck does not even have a chip key.

That's what I said and thought. Was wonder WHO is going to mess with this next and no response. Enough bucks have been spend if that represents time is inexcusable for no answers or a fix.
The crystal ball says with minimal info that starter was off left hanging by wires now pulled all out of a harness, left loose was said. IF not how did they get loose?
A 40 amp fuse! Yikes - that's a dead short as you said HT - shouldn't be that hard to find. Question was WHO is taking this on? If not OP it's about finding anyone with a brain IMO,

I wouldn't give any credence to the starter wire story. It's as much a smokescreen as the key chip story.
With the exception of the main battery cable and the solenoid trigger wire, there are no power supplies at the starter on this vehicle. Everything is fed through the underhood fuse and relay center.

Let it be. I see the right-to-left story meaning price charged first and it didn't work and no clue about it except it cost bucks. We don't know what the real deal is?

They said they pulled the starter and the solenoid and said they were fine. I've said from the start it's a short but I have virtually no mechanical experience.

And apparently, neither does the guy you have been paying.

About your only option here is to find a competent technician that can find this problem without charging you for a bunch of incorrect diagnosis. When he finds the problem, it should be very obvious and easy to confirm.

With a short this bad it has to be a very high current wire shorted directly to ground so look around for a harness that has been pinched, cut or burned on the exhaust.
