have bought 98 forester, subaru 2.5L, car is mint even with 250K km on it, got it dirt cheap...was being sold as timing belt broke. am told this is an interference engine and valve damage during breakage or attempts to roll car over after that is 99% likely, and if so engine is not worth repairing. i want to test engine somehow before coughing up for new one. was also told a manual compression test can diagnose this potential valve issue...two questions 1st will this work, 2nd will this further damage engine thanks. dan.

I'm afraid everyone would love to be able to determine valve damage before repairing a timing but but unfortunately, that's not possible. There are only 2 ways to determine potential damage.

  1. Repair the timing belt and then take a complete compression test
  2. Tear down the engine before the timing belt repair to inspect for damage.
