1999
Hyundai
Elantra
2.0 Inline 4

99 Elantra. Literally was running fine one minute and ruff the next. It would kick and buck under 2k rpm (that’s a guess, don’t have a tac). But soon as I went over, it smoothed out. Does this for every gear. It idles ruff...almost like it's not firing for one of the four. Odd in the fact that it feels and sounds like I’m under load, pulling uphill...then once it reaches that rpm...bam..smooths out. I thought it might be a fuel flow issue... so I replaced the fuel filter, added some HEAT in case I got some bad fuel, and replaced the spark plugs. Didn’t help. My thought was an injector? I restricted the airflow while reving the engine, trying to force a bit more fuel thru the injectors to maybe clean them out...that and the injector cleaner in the HEAT.... but no go.
Any idea where to go now?

Check engine light on?

Back in the old days you could do that on carbed engines. Doesn't work that way on fuel injection.

Funny that...
Check engine light comes on and blinks, disconnect battery and the light goes away. It comes back on and blinks after I take it out for a spin...but not at idle.

The flashing light means you have a misfire. When it is flashing that means the misfire is so bad that it is damaging the catalytic converter. What you need to do is to hook up a code reader to see what code the computer is storing. The code(s) tells you why the light is coming on and can help you out in figuring what is going on. Write down the code numbers and let us know.
