99 Merc won't start

Hi,
1999 Merc Grand Marquis
130000 miles
Parked the car in April 2010 and removed both cables. Returned in Jan 2011 to a dead
battery - replaced with new Interstate. Starter turns engine but nothing. Sound is
like the key has no chip.
Another piece of info. In April 2010 we lost original key and had locksmith cut two new
keys with new chip ID. These did work prior to storing car. Now when attempting to start
car, sound is like engine won't start b/c of no chip in key.
Is it possible the dead battery situation could have caused a loss of the new chip ID or
something similar? If not, what else may I do to get it started?

Peter; Sorry no one has gotten back to you, yet. Check to see if you are getting spark to the plugs during crank. If so, check for fuel pressure. Any way that the vehicle could have gotten 'bumped' while sitting? If no fuel pressure, reset the inertia switch in the trunk. Just a wild guess.... Engine could be flooded. Might want to check the plugs?

Thkx for the response. Yes, car could have been bumped. Also spoke with key locksmith who had
me test both his keys and he said they are good so prblm must be electronic or fuel. I have seen the
red button in the trunk you mentioned. I don't know if it is in or out but will reset it tonight. Also I'll get on
the ground under trunk while my wife turns key (not engine) to see if I can hear the fuel pump.

Just some thoughts: Can you hear the fuel pump prime up? That's a while for a car to just sit so open to several things IMO unless carefully put away.
If you don't hear the fuel pump a trick is to swap relay (underhood and marked) with the A/C relay which should read exact same part #. It's a maybe but they go bad on me all the time to the point I carry spares! Cheap part even at a Ford Dealer,

Thanks to all of you,
It was the fuel pump. I didn't try swapping the relays but I did bang on the tank while my wife tried starting it.
Next question, however, I will be storing it for four or five months at a time again. Is there any thing special I should do other than remove the battery cables?

Add a little bit of fuel stabilizer to the fuel and overfill the tires a little is about all.

Peterc: Check out even Wally-World for a "floating" trickle charger. Bet I have 5 of them and the jerk with too may cars and things w batteries. They are chargers + maintainers and good for batteries. Come on automatically and shut off when not needed so you leave the battery connected. (now ~$21 bucks and worth it big time)
Fuel stabilizer as Hammer suggested is a must. Here anyway I have no idea what crap they are sell us so it goes in low or little used items or seasonal items using gasoline. Damn - still have some troubles but I swear it helps.
Not into additives for the most part or anything that claims to fix everything in a bottle but another cool product is SeaFoam but an ounce will do - don't use the whole container would be my call. It does work and helps old gas but sparingly as said.

I've used seafoam in the past when someone said it could get rid of the "check engine" light. It did work a couple of times but not any more. I'll put some in the tank next time I store it.
