In tank fuel pumps are cooled and lubricated by the fuel in the tank. When you run a car out of gas, it pumps a lot of air through the pump which overheats it and causes some severe wear and many times, failure when they cool off. You will need to use a fuel pressure gauge to verify this ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

thank you for the reply. I knew that would be the first thing that I would be told as i have been looking at other similar posts. I can try to borrow one from auto store or just buy one as I work on all my autos. how much do you think a good pressure tester costs

Do you even hear the pump run for a few seconds when you turn the ignition on? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

The service port should be on the incoming fuel line at the back edge of the engine. You need to pull off the engine cover. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

If you turn the key to the run position (not start), you should hear the pump whine/hum for a few seconds. Good place to listen is with your ear up against the tank while someone cycles the key on. If you don't hear anything, more than likely the pump isn't running. Sometimes (not always) you can bang on the bottom of the tank while someone cranks the engine. If the engine starts while your smacking on the tank, the pump is the culprit. If not, you need to do some more fuel pump troubleshooting. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Yep, you need to check fuel pressure as HT pointed out. Needs more than 55 psi to open the injector poppets as you may have read. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

so i tested the pressure got 60 psi, then turned the key and it started right up, a little rough but it cleared right up. I did notice that the fuel pressure would not hold at 60 psi it droped to 40 in about 5 sec. this was before running, when it runs it stayed at 60. ????????? now i am worired if this will happen again. any advice on this

The rest pressure shouldn't drop like that. Could be a bad check valve in the fuel pump causing the fuel to drain back to the tank and cause delayed starting. That is the problem with intermittent issues, you can't figure out what is wrong if everything is working. We get those in the shop a whole lot and they aren't getting any easier. Guess next time it does that have your fuel pressure gauge handy. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
