Another wonderful problem regarding starting the car

This 2010 Hyundai Sonata has been such a terror the last month. It's been a domino effect of problems, just one after the other. Let's see what you'll say about this that Google doesn't say. The past three days, starting the car has become more and more difficult. The first couple times, I would turn the key to the on position and the engine would turn over but not "catch" then I would turn it to off and back on and it would start right up. This happened only when it had been sitting for several hours. After the initial start, I could turn it off and on over and over without problems. Today however, it acted completely different. I went outside and tried starting it, but no matter how many times I tried, it wouldn't catch UNTIL I tapped on the gas pedal a couple times. When it started, I stepped on the gas a little to get the RPMs up and it started acting like it was going to die. When I let off the gas, it started idling okay and when I stepped on the gas again, it revved just fine. I did smell a strange odor from the tail pipe. Maybe too much fuel? I decided to take our other car to work and my wife later tried to leave with the Sonata, and it did the same thing to her after sitting for only an hour. I know that generally means air to fuel ratio is off. Besides air filter issues, PCV valve, fuel filter (Google showed that part is a non-maintenance part but possibly?), fuel injectors are dirty, fuel pump (I'm pretty sure fuel is getting pumped in)what could it be? What is the best case scenario and the worst? Here is a little history on the car; currently at 123,000 miles Replaced air filter and thermostat at 121,000 in early July Replaced coolant sensor at 123,000 less than a week ago as well as diagnosed with oil leaking internally from possibly valve O-rings (currently waiting to get that further diagnosed) It's just odd that this current issue would all the sudden arise and get worse so quickly. Any advice again would be beneficial and appreciated!

I'd say your first test should be to read the fuel pressure using an accurate gauge. Do this before the first start when the problem is present. It does no good to test it after you've gotten the car started. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Refresh that this car also went thru an overheating issue perhaps the source of a host of problems? Yes to checking fuel pressure if that's all you ever said just as HT said. That if found low or fading out holding pressure probably isn't caused by overheating? Unknown as if this thing was smokin' hot it would never end. Almost all fuel pumps don't like being low or running out of fuel. Is that in the cards too? This new behavior is about what they do if run dry or pumps get way too hot from low fuel. Test away put this fire out and wait for the next surprise. Perhaps let a shop go thru this thing like a pre-purchase inspection if it was for sale and you were thinking about this one. It just seems there's so much not typical to me without that gremlin from just a couple months ago, T

**Update** After what just happened, I'm taking this car into the mountains and putting a stick of dynamite in it. My wife was at a stoplight and the car died. She tried restarting it, but the engine just kept turning over and over but no matter what would not start. She reported there was a strong electrical smell. I had to call a tow truck and have it towed to my mechanic. This is too stressful of a car to even consider putting money into. I would love to hear though what multi hundred dollar repair it needs now.

Just to make sure this thread is completed, my mechanic said it is the fuel pump. It is getting a current, but not doing the job of getting fuel into the system. A simple fix, but not sure if it's worth the amount...

Not sure if it's worth it? It's a 2010 Car with low mileage. Why wouldn't it be worth it? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Well, you can make a decision to sell the car but it has no value if it doesn't run.

Huh! A 2010 anything not worth a fuel pump? Add 20 years if OK it would be or even more. I know you don't want an expense but wouldn't get more than scrap value if not running OK if that's all it is, T
