Backfire thru manifold

Hi, son in law has a 2000 chevy impala with a 6cyl. About 125k miles. Backfired thru manifold and blew it to pieces. Had mechanic replace and he did not find any fault codes. ! week later bingo a bigger hole in manifold. Now they are leaning towards the timing chain being shot. Any help would sure be appreciated.

3.8L? Haven't seen a timing chain on one of those cause an intake explosion as of yet.
Make sure that the fuel pressure regulator isn't leaking on it. If the regulator leaks into the intake manifold and you have a slow start condition from a battery problem or battery cable problem, the engine on those will kickback and ignite the fuel vapors under the manifold and create an explosion.
They may have to remove the vacuum line from the fuel pressure regulator and run the engine for a few minutes to see if the fuel comes up out of the regulator nipple.
