We Have a 2006 Chevy cobalt with a 2.2ecotec. There was oil in the coolant and it wouldn’t start without the coolant cap loose. We were told it was the head gasket. The head had .0011 warp which we had resurfaced. While everything was apart we replaced the timing chain, water pump, and thermostat (previous thermostat’s rubber gasket was shredded). Once back together we changed the oil and flushed the coolant. It started up good and ran good for a 3 mile test drive. After the test drive I pulled the coolant reservoir cap and the coolant was bubbling again. Any idea what the issue is?

Bummer. IDK, you resurfaced hope totally pro job and check for cracks still could miss one or more. Other is block, intake just like the first time just more attention.
Stinks - only good thing is it's faster the second time which to you right now isn't very funny I'm sure.
Other: Almost everything you MUST use new bolts are a one time deal turn to torque is everywhere,

And this is why you never should have attempted to repair that engine. Too many unknowns and probable lower end damage.

Thanks for the feedback. I am hoping this was just air bubbles coming out from all of the coolant filling air pockets.
After the short test drive I let it sit over night and came back to it. The reservoir was empty so I refilled it and took for a couple short drives. Everything is running good and the coolant is not bubbling now.
Oil looks good and coolant appears to have some residual oil but nothing like before.

Now it sound like you are ok except for another flush but this time learn how to fill this with coolant not relying on it to purge itself isn't the right way nor dependable. Allowing that to bubble then was just overheating yet again then the cool down did suck what it could back.
IDK every last vehicle but if you must get a vacuum fill so there's no doubts or just be in trouble all over again. Wish you luck but this isn't done yet has to prove itself and oil out of coolant,
