CADILLAC DISTRIBUTOR PROBLEM

1983 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz 4.1 Engine V8 with 110,000 miles The distributor on the car is not keyed for installation with only one orientaion. The spark plug wires were all taken off at the same time and not labeled. Clearly since its not keyed for installation the manuel is of NO help. I need to find out what the firing order is for the car, or how to go about finding the firing order. PLEASE HELP! I've just kind of looked on line for maybe a solution.

Thanks for looking. That is the same firing order that is in the manuel. I guess my real question is how can I find out the true firing order since the distributor isn't keyed with only one orientation. The only one we know for sure that is right is the 1st one. Other than that the rest are wrong and there is nothing in the manuel about the firing order if the distributor isn't keyed, except to label them and write it down.

The car was running today. We opened the hood to put fluids in and relized that the spark plug wires on the distributor were not connected the same way as it showed in the manuel. So we took them all off and re did them according to the manuel. As soon as we were finished and went to start the car again, the car wouldn't start. So if we have the spark plug wires connected correctly (according to the manuel), then why won't the car run anymore? In the manuel it says that if the plug wires aren't connected the same as it shows there in the manuel then before disconnecting the wires make sure to label them. We didn't label them in the begining, so we can't put them back the way they were when the car was running. So what can I do or where can I find out a firing order that is going to work with my car since the distributor isn't keyed for installation with one orientation?

Because somebody probably moved them and then moved the distributor to compensate for it, ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Normally I would say the same as hammer has. It dont get any easier than pictures. But its late and i cant sleep. You did not mention the dist. being removed so I am assuming it has not. Using the picture locate #1 cylinder. Remove the spark plug from #1. Have a helper slowly bump eng over with starter. At same time hold a finger over the plug hole . The moment you feel air pressure STOP, very slowly turn eng by hand with a ratchet till the (0) mark is at the pointer on the crankshaft pulley . Take dist cap off. Note which spark plug tower on cap the rotor is pointing to This is where number one plug wire will go. Follow the picture for the rest . Getting sleepy now , good luck. LIFE'S SHORT GO FISH
