CAR WON'T STOP ACCELERATING!

I was driving my jeep, hit the gas pretty hard and when I let off I heard a strange noise. The car was also still accelerating! So, naturally I tried to unstick the pedal with my foot while driving...but the pedal already had returned to where it should be, with all stiffness intact. As I came to a red light, I knew this was serious, because the accelerator was stuck so hard that the tires were starting to peel because of my foot on the brake. I pulled over and checked the pedal, everything seemed fine, but the engine was still running as if I had the gas pedal half-way down! I checked under the hood...by the air filter where the spring is, it seemed fine, as did the choke, and everything else on the carb. So, it's pretty simple to know the problem is after the gas pedal, and before the spring (throttle, ignition spring, whatever). But exactly where is the problem? Anyone heard of this happening before? Something inside obviously slipped. The car is a Jeep Cherokee Pioneer, which has a GM motor + tranny. The motor is a 2.8L v6 w/ a 2BBL carb. The car previously had trouble accelerating at random times, it would hesitate when the gas was pushed too forcefully, leading me to think it's something wrong with the lean/rich fuel mixture....but I don't see the idle alone being the problem here, seeing as the cars practically accelerating THAT MUCH on it's own. If anybody has any advice or knowledge about this, I would appreciate it. Hopefully I can drag my ass outside and play with it and figure it out before anyone replies. Thanks.
