Camaro Ignition problems

Hello, Im really stumped on this one. I have a 1989 Chevy Camaro with a 2.8L engine. 200,000 miles. Fuel pressure is 47 psi, compression is 125 to 135 psi, I have injector pulse and was having spark as the engine did run. It has new plugs, wires, cap, rotor and ignition module. Ignition timing was only 2 deg out. After installing a new fuel filter the engine started and ran for a short while (10 min) then I shut it down. I tried to restart and it backfired and literally blew the muffler in half and the shop was full of smoke. So now here is the problem. It will not start and nothing has changed except that I have very little spark at the coil. It's nice and blue but seems very weak as I can ground a screwdriver and lean it over toward the coil I have about a .010 gap before the spark will jump. Its worse at the end of the coil wire and ground. I have nothing at all the plug wires. Am I just looking at a lazy coil? Or what else am I not seeing? Pick up coil? Now after all that I had better mention this, It does have an aftermarket alarm system on it. Dont know if it works but I did run a aftermarket wire back from the coil to the alarm brain box. This was causing my origonal no start problem. I did unplug the wire in question and that is when I finally got it started. Now back to the begining of post. Thanks. fuzzy1

The first thing you should do is use an adjustable spark tester and the end of the plug wire to get an accurate reading on just how much KV you have available and we can go from there. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Sorry for the delay in replying. My dads been in and out of the hospital for 2 weeks. Ok, I should know more tomorrow as I'll have to locate a kv tool. As soon as I get it i'll repost with the results. Thanks for being patient.

yup, yup thats the tool I just picked today. I started out with the coil wire connected to the tester and adjusted to 10. No spark. I readjusted to about 5. No spark. I fully screwed in the adjuster and rotated out only a half turn. Now I have spark and its blue but inconsistent. Im thinking its a bad coil. I also removed the alarm system as well and that did not make any changes.

That coil should be capable of over 30K. Use a noid light to test for pulse at both the coil negative and one of the injector plugs to make sure we have good reference signal. Thanks for all the help. It was a bad ignition coil. I installed new coil and engine is purrring like a kitten.
