Car idling rough? Sign In

2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS 2.4 L automatic

Car starts and fires up just fine, although it’s idling pretty rough after driving it for a while (I commute 40 hwy miles one way per day so roughly after about 40 minutes drive time). The car hasn’t stalled yet when it’s idling but the tachometer shows to be twitching between 500-800 rpm and you can feel the car shake a little bit. In park, the car does fine, although when stopped at a stop light or in drive, the car jerks a bit while idling. It accelerates just fine, and cruises just fine, it’s just when it is idling. Engine light is on and I plan to take it to autozone to get a read on it to have an idea, but my initial thought is a possible bad spark plug, MAF sensor, or IAC sensor? Any advice helps. Thanks.

The first step should definitely be to read the stored codes.

It won't hurt to clean the throttle body in the meantime.

First eliminate all vacuum or air leaks in the system (very important)

. Remove the intake snorkel, have someone hold the throttle wide open for you and scrub the back side of the throttle plate and surrounding bore with an old tooth brush and some carb cleaner. Be sure to spray some into the small holes next to the throttle plate. That should help stabilize the idle.

Could be a misfire. Found out what the code is and let us know.

Update! The scan threw a code Concerning the EGR valve, which I’m not too surprised about but wasn’t expecting. Is there any proper way of cleaning the valve or is it as easy as taking it out, washing it down with water, drying it, and throwing it back on?

You don't have to wash anything.
Remove the valve and inspect the pintle and see if there is a chunk of carbon preventing it from closing.
If there is just dig it out.
