Hi all…the vehicle is a 2009 kia spectra. it has a brand new battery. the problem began about 4 years ago and would happen only in very cold weather. i turn the key and there is just a click. nothing. for some reason, my girlfriend decided to dump water over the engine and Voila…it started and drove fine thereafter. the water trick has proven itself to be legitimate over time and was/is no fluke. the problem has suddenly gotten worse and the water thing works but without as much ease as it once did (lower success rate, but still works eventually) i’ve checked the wires for corrosion and damage but they appear fine. i’m guessing theres some arcing somewhere but idk much thanks for any help anyone can offer.

That's got to be the dumbest thing I ever heard, You may have been lucky so far but you are eventually going to do some damage to your electronics.

You need to diagnose the problem properly and leave the water home.

Dumb because there is absolutely no benefit to it and all kinds of damage can result.

That's like fixing constipation by drinking gasoline.

Try tapping on the starter with something while someone is trying to start it. Much safer.

I've heard everything now! OMG - NO! It was 6 years ago +/- car and battery would have been if original then 6 to 7 possible years old which is way too old just for that. Sequence of events the battery loses it usually faster than that at it's slow demise burned up the starter contrary to what you'd think it get's hot fluttering is on purpose by design so it doesn't try was too late burned it anyway.

Single click now same starter? It's just really odd luck you haven't wrecked something with that trick but it probably just warmed up cold starter (if below freezing by how far unknown yet) and it responded.
Try the tap on it trick to assorted levels not too much to crack it new, or not now any reason for a poor delivery of amps will croak a good heavy motor which a starter is.
Let it be just shocked this didn't really damage something doing this for 4 years! Escapes all common sense??
