Car rattles Sign In

I have an old beater i like to drive but its starting to drive me crazy-
The engine has been visibly shaking to the point that it makes a constant loud rattling sound at a rate of about 1 tick per second or so. The car is a 1990 Oldsmobile cutlass 2.5 carbarated 4 banger 3 speed automatic. The transmission has always made a lite ticking sound that a mechanic told me is due to the plastic gears rattling loosely. Is there anything i need to tighten to get the annoying rattling to stop? its not audible while driving at 20 mph+ but while idealing or driving slow its quite loud. Im no mechanic but i can do basic work with instructions so any help would be appreciated

Re: Car rattles Sign In

Transmissions don't have plastic gears. Never have. Maybe he's referring to the speedo drive if this has a mechanical cable. Carbs went the way of the dodo in 1986 due to emissions regs. You have TBI. If the motor visibly shakes I'd look for a bad motor mount, and with the age of this car also check the exhaust heat shields. If they aren't firmly attached the noise is quite irritating.

Your mechanic is probably meaning the fiber cam gear on the front of the engine.

Thats probably it, thanks for the pic. So how will i know if a motor mount is bad? will it just be loose and need tightening or will i have to replace it?
