Hi, I hope someone can help as I'm almost ready to throw myself in a skip Mad
My car is a 1992 Citroen C3, 1.4 HDI, diesel, 90bhp, 16v, SX with 125000 mileage.

I purchased it last November & over the following three weeks it became slower and slower to start. By December it would take several attempts to start it. It ran well apart from the EM light coming on now & again & going into limp mode but that would only last a split second. Couldn't contact the dealer I got it from as seems they've done a runner Crazy As a result it's been at a garage having investigative work since January but still no joy.
Since being at the garage the following has been done:
They said it was definitely one of the fuel pumps so we replaced the in tank sender unit first as cheaper but it didn't help.

It's now had the main injector pump replaced along with a new fuel line system (brittle pipe broke during pump installation).

It should be fixed after that but still won't start unless he uses easy start. Apparently it runs well once started but turn it off & it won't start again. He says the pump must be faulty even tho the company I got it from says it was fully tested & running like a dream so it doesn't make sense. The only way to test it is to remove it but he will charge me another £150 to remove it. The company I got it from said it could be my old fuel rail sensor can't cope with a fully functioning pump after my faulty one so have just sent the one that went with the pump they supplied me with. I have to wait for that to be fitted but have little faith now.

I'd like to ask if there could be another reason for this problem? The guy at the garage told me it definitely wasn't the injectors & is definitely the pump but if he got it wrong I won't be happy that I've spent £600 on work that didn't need doing. I just don't know what to do anymore if the fuel rail sensor doesn't solve it either.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks!

This car isn't sold in the US, and I have never seen one myself nor do I have tech info on it. But Here is my idea.

You have an inline injection pump, mechanical injectors from what I can tell of your post. I am used to working on heavy duty diesels in US, but there are similarities in design.

You have an electric lift pump in your tank which supplies low pressure fuel to your high pressure pump. If there is an air leak in the suction prior to the pump then air bubbles are coming in your diesel and will cause issues. If you hook a piece of clear tubing between the inlet of the injector pump and the inlet line you can watch it as it runs. Start seeing a bunch of bubbles means its time to look at the fuel pickup pipe below the pump for cracks. It would be sucking air and giving you the issue.
