Dodge stratus (shaking, dying at stops)

Hi, I have a 1996 dodge stratus (not by choice), and I'm a poor college student. A few weeks ago my car started shaking and rpm dropping when I would come to a stop, some times it would die. Following some weird noise under the hood I notice that a hose with a knob that reads, "EVAP service port," has melted around a hot metal pipe. So I splice the line and move it up higher to avoid the same problem. Well for two weeks it worked. But now when I come to a stop the rpm's drop and the car shakes worse then ever, it dies just about every time I come to a complete stop. If the car doesn't die at a stop it shakes and when I press on the gas it doesn't go, I have to floor it to get it to come out of the "shakes." Also when in idle I feel pulsing in the EVAP service port line that I spliced earlier. Please help me figure out what is wrong.
