Drive belt replacement

I have a '98 Mercury Mystique 6 cyl. front wheel drive car and need to change the drive belt. Was shown by Haynes book to use a 1/2" breaker bar with 3/8" bit in the square hole of the belt tensioner pulley. There is also a round bolt hoding this down with a "star" type hole which apparently needs a special tool. Problem is, the space to work with between the wheelwell and the pulley is only 1 1/2" and I can't fit the breaker bar between to loosen the pulley. How can I do this? Is there a special tool for this? Also, is there a special tool for the "star" type nut securing the pulley? Any advice would be welcome! Kind Regards, Frustrated

Arggh! These cars should get an award for tight quarters. See if you can get at things thru wheel well but I doubt it on this one. Special tool may be needed that can fit in there, T
