Engine Won't Start. Help!

Engine Won't Start. Help! Sign In

I have a 1971 Chrsyler Newyorker with a 7.2 440 engine. It ran great for a while then my points went out and I pulled the Dual point system that was in it and installed an OEM single point system. Now the car won't start. it would start for a while but when you put it in gear it would die. I can't keep the engine running long enough to time it. Does any one have any idea how I can get this Monster engine to come back to life?

If the car was running fine, you had a point problem and change the dist and now it won't idle. The 1st thing I would check would be to set if you got it set up on #1 and not a tooth or 2 off.

Have you tried moving the dist back & forth to see if you can find a "better spot" to get it to idle?

Pull # 1 bring up on the compression stroke, pop the cap off and make sure the rotor is point at #1. If every this is good there you may want to back up to the very being when you 1st had a problem that caused a running problem and let us know what's going on.

Maybe it wasn't bad points and something else....

It won't even start right now. I will check the rotor and make sure that it pointed the right way. Any thing else anyone can think of would be helpful.

Does this distributor have a gear on the bottom or a slot that lets the dist. "fall in"? I don't know why you went to a single point dist.? Also, the breaker plate on these engines were known to go out changing the dwell so much they would not run. Is the coil firing?
