Engine check light Sign In

I have a 2007 Saturn Relay. My check engine light came on yesterday and lately the car kinda skips a beat when i drive off from alight.

I filled up the tank on thursday night and when i went to drive the care the next day it showed that i had no gas then about 5 minutes later it showed i had a full tank then half a tank. I hope this makes sense. any thoughts on the problem?

Re: Engine check light Sign In

The gas gauge is a separate issue and probably a bad sending unit in the tank.

The "check engine" light is an indicator for a system that monitors many electronic functions in the system, also called the "malfunction indicator lamp" (MIL). It can come on for any of hundreds of different causes from any of the systems that the computer monitors. Some are very important and can lead to further component or engine damage and some are emissions related not as serious but still a problem and need to be repaired.

Your first step is to have the computer scanned to retrieve the trouble codes that were set when the check engine light came on. Those codes will give you specific information about what the computer saw and will get you pointed in the right direction to find your problem. With a 1996 or newer and some 95 cars and you have an AutoZone or Advanced auto parts in your area, they will read them for free. Once you have these code numbers, we can be a lot more specific about what your problem may be.

Thank you- How much does it usually cost to have a test run on it?

I don't know what test your referring to but most shops charge by the hour for whatever time it takes to find your problems. As I stated, Autozone will read the codes for free but just get the code from them. Don't let them give you any technical advice. They aren't mechanics.

And after Autozone or Advance Auto read it and gives you the code if for some reason you decide to take it to the dealer to get it fixed the dealer will have to rerun and check the code because they won't or can't honor the one from the parts stores. So the dealer will charge you one hour of labor to do it, which the dealer I go is $80 an hour.
