Engine overheating with coolant level normal Sign In

This is a general question, not for a specific car. From time to time I see a car on Craigslist for sale that says "engine overheats after 15 minutes driving". I know of several things that can cause overheating; clogged radiator, stuck thermostat, bad fan, bad switch to fan, etc. but I want to know if a blown head gasket can cause the engine to overheat if the water level is still normal in the radiator.

Assorted cooling systems out there. Some will read high on a dash gauge then drop when fan(s) kick on and normal for some of those.

Few now, fixed fans, belt driven and or most with non transverse engines (means sideways) as in front is to one side not front of vehicle do NOT usually.

If they are selling and admit it they either don't know or do know there's something wrong used and private sales are greatly AYOR so you get those checked out by a shop qualified to do just that,

Most definitely. It is pumping hot exhaust gases into the cooling system. If someone is selling a car BECAUSE it overheats, you can be pretty confident they found out it's a blown head gasket or cracked head.

STAY AWAY!
