how can you tell if you have a broken ring instead of cracked head or block. I have a chevy 350 1984 engine four barrel carb'd engine in my 1986 chevy g-30 van. i have oil leaking out of rt valve cover which has been replaced but still leaks and engine over heats occasionally. White smoke on right side exhust. Ive changed head gasket and intake gaskets noticed light brown deposits on #2 and 4 cylinder valves

Check compression in #2,4,6 and 8 cylinders. If a cylinder has drastically lower compression than the others, then start there. If you have a broken ring you should be getting some blow by. You should be able to notice some more than usual smoke coming out of the valve covers.

Remove the oil cap while engine is running, is there oil comming out?, place your hand over the fill hole, do you feel alot of pressure? check air filter for oil ,if yes to all, you got blow-by. When you replaced the head gasket did you have the head resurfaced?/or ckecked the valves for oil seals leaking that too would cause the white smoke, and a compression test would tell what condition the rings/valves are in,BTW take a look at anti-freeze level in radiator.please post back on these questions.

Thanks for suggestions dave284, Some parts i can answer right away. oil fill hole has breather attached it would seem to me i would have oil coming out of it but left side of engine is clean,on oil. Head was supposed to be reconditioned when i got it from my cousin, who i trust very much. The side that leaks has pvc on it which is new haven't tried to see if there's pressure there as when engine idles i have no leak. Ran engine after i put new head gasket on around town and had no oil leak at that time it wasn't until i got on highway to go to parker az about 35 miles that oil came out again. Still only on right side. Anti freeze level did drop about a quart, but engine started to over heat about 210 degress ,when i stopped in parker for stop sign so shut it off temp rose more after shut off and over flow did spit some out so hard to determin where coolant was lost but white smoke was much more at time of temp rise on right exhaust.

I'm watching dave. Not sure what to add. If just one head was reconditioned I ask what happened with the other and why was it done to begin with and why just one. Both heads and the intake manifold must match up or a couple degrees off because of one gasket being different than the other or one head resurfaced would throw it off. Cracked block or head: I've seen that with brand new defects, frozen as with no anti-freeze, or who knows when an engine blows up I never bothered to tear one down when condemed and obvious so can't say much for that. Assorted textbook compression testing, pressure up a cylinder thru spark plug hole, pressure up cooling system and noting what the plugs look like and if different ones abut each other. I think this is a problem with the gasket not working properly or the parts don't match well enough as a guess, T
