Engine won't fire

i have a 1994 Ford Bronco 302, 5L engine 310,000 miles, was running fine i parked it went to the store cam out and it wouldn't start, i could hear the fuel pump pressure up but no fire, no warning light flash... nothing. Can you give me a place to start my trouble shooting? Thanks

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment. If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money. Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for. These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause. 1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on. 2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on. 3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off. 4) If all of these things check good, then you would need to do a complete compression test. Not if but when was the timing chain replaced? They don't last that many miles. Compression would be low to zero and perhaps even the rotor in distributor wont turn now if it really went out, T
|

HammeTime, I pulled the codes and got 116 Coolant temp sensor out of range and 636 Transmission temp sensor out of range would any of these keep it from starting? Thanks

Bet Hammer took a day off from this stuff as he works hard and works hard here. CTS is to adjust how much fuel gets delivered based on engine temp. If and codes don't mean just toss that item that was bad it could deliver way too much fuel or way to little when cold. Way too much it would likely start and run terrible - perhaps so much extra fuel it would flood it, if way too little, priming throttle body it would still react and perhaps stay running and when warmed up should run normally even with a bad one IMO. Doubt trans temp is more than a warning of sensor or connection and would prevent it from starting and as just said CTS would make it run lousy or flood. You need to go thru the list he provided and MAY/SHOULD check connections and replace these items but IMO you would have normal spark with either wrong. Check a spark plug too and see if it's soaked. Very wet with gas plugs can prevent it from starting. Still need to go thru that list of checks, T

Ok tests where as follows. Spark is good. Fuel pressure at the shrader valve on the fuel rail was 40 psi and held with the key off. I could use a little help with the injector pulse test, i don't have noid light but do have a meter can i use it to do the pulse test? Or should i go borrow a light from the local parts store? Do I unplug the the injector and test the hot lead at the plug? Thanks for the help. Bronco M

The meter is OK to read the power side but it won't respond fast enough to read ground pulse. A compression test is part of what i asked him to do. Well finally completed the compreisson test the results were all eight cylinders were 100 psi plus or minus a couple because the pressure gauge was the old hand held kind. What do you think? Thanks

Apparently you're back to square one and starting over. You just told me it passed all tests and if that were really true, the car would be running. You need to make sure it's a strong spark that can jump at least 3/8". Ok i got a spark tester hooked it to the coil wire at the distributor got nothing, checked volts to the coil had 12V i replaced the coil and same thing. I checked the coil wire resistance and got 6 ohms, is it my coil wire? Thanks

No, you're not getting trigger ground to the coil. Yes pulse test was good, ignition module i assume its in the steering column where the key goes to start the truck? if so doesn't supprise me my ignition switch is pretty worn out.

No, it's mounted on the fender well. Thanks i will do that, it scared me at first, i looked it up in my chiltons and it showed an ignition module in the distributor. Is what i'm looking for called EEC-IV module?
