Check engine light on? Fuel pressure drain back is one cause for delayed starting. Connect a fuel pressure gauge and look for fuel pressure bleed off when the fuel pump turns off. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

No lights on. If the preasure bleeds off would that be a fuel pump or is there a seperate regulator?

There is also a TSB out for your symptoms. Might be a good idea to perform the TSB first if the software isn't at that revision level. TSB 06-8-14 05/01/06 HARD START/LONG CRANK FORD: 2005 Focus ISSUE Some 2005 Focus 2.0L automatic transmission equipped vehicles may experience longer than expected cranking times followed by poor, rough run-up during a start procedure. If this condition only occurs intermittently, reprogram the powertrain control module (PCM). ACTION Reprogram the powertrain control module (PCM) to the latest calibration using WDS release B42.8 and higher or B43.1 and higher. This new calibration is not included in the B43 CD. Calibration files may also be obtained at the website. WARRANTY STATUS: Eligible Under Provisions Of New Vehicle Limited Warranty Coverage Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Would I have to take it to the dealer to check the upate or could, say, Advance Auto Parts check that for me?

You would have to take it to the dealer or a shop that has the capability of programming the computer in your vehicle. Usually if there is a TSB and your symptoms match, the TSB should be performed first. I am not going to guarantee that is going to fix your problem. If it is a software bug though, replacing parts is going to be a waste of time. The fuel system on your vehicle is returnless. If you have fuel pressure drain back, it could have a bad check valve in the fuel pump. Another possibility is a fuel injector leak. If there was an external leak, say fuel line, you would probably smell it and see gas puddles on the ground. To determine if you have an injector leak or fuel pump check valve leak, you would have to isolate them by using a shut off valve. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

The problem just started, I'm thinking it's not the update. It doesn't start loaded up when hot, so sounds more like your first guess, fuel pump, I'm sure the pump is not serviceable, which means a assembly? I will have to get my hands on a gauge and test pressure. Thanks for your help. Charlie p.s. I will let you know.

Aftermarket does sell the pump motor and strainer by themselves, so you don't have to replace the entire module. There is no factory service info on replacing just the motor, so can't tell you how well that works out. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
