Head gasket or new motor?? Sign In

I have a 1996 chevy van in great condition , it needs a head gasket and so far Ive gotten est for app. $2000. to repair it. Would it make more sense to get a new or rebuilt motor ? and how much would I be looking at for that? some repair shops didnt even want the job as it is labor intensive...
thanks

That's enough $$ for that but it is indeed labor intensive to do a real nice job. What engine its this? How many miles and what history and care with this one that you know of. If the 5.7 they are famouse for intake manifold coolant leaks and that's not a head gasket job or anywhere near that kind of $$,

thanks for the speedy reply , its a 6 cyl 4.3 , my wifes brother gave it to us so we have no $$ into it and its gotten us just about everywhere , hence the reason for fixing it...oh btw it has 167000 miles on it......thanks

If that engine is worth a damn I'd fix that one. It's a cut down Chev 350 or 5.7 minus two cyl = 4.3 and they are pretty tough. If it's not sludged it should have a lot more life. These are cast iron heads and block so they rarely warp the heads. The hardest part of this job could be rusted bolts - exhaust manifolds and to pipes. You might add a timing chain if you want to keep this one.

Base your decision on how good this one really is now,
