So I just got my '91 Honda CRX smogged by the idle / rev test, and it passed beautifully at the 2500rpm test, but failed miserably at the idle test. I keep the car mechanically well tuned up and never abuse it (although I use it a lot). I do my own maintainence and have recently replaced the plugs, wires, cap, button, coil. Air filter is fine, oil is not overdue, and check engine light is not coming on. It drives well except for being a little "blippy" off idle... not much power just off idle--it takes off better if I show it a little more gas and get the RPMs up past 2k before letting off the clutch. The ignition and valve timing are correct.

so these are the stats: RPM:804 %CO2:13.8 %O2:0.0 HC(PPM):355 (max allow: 120) CO(%):2.13 (max allow 1.00)

and to compare vs the 2500RPM test: CO2%:14.7 O2%:0.3 HC(PPM):16 CO%0.06

Any ideas as what would cause such numbers? The blippy performance coming off idle seems like too lean a mixture and that would cause lean misfire at idle which would be dumping extra HC out the tailpipe. But what can I do about it? Could a bad O2 sensor cause it to be this far outta wack?

Any help would be appreciated!

Matt from CA

Check for vacuum leaks as that will throw things off especially at low rpm,
