Holley carb adjustment help

Hey all, first post so please bear with me. 1977 Chevy El Camino 350 V8 100K+ miles Recently bought an El Camino to try and get into shape and after cleaning smaller carbs (chainsaw, motorcycle) decided to tackle the aftermarket Holley carb. Unhooked and labeled the fuel line and vacuum hoses and got it off without incident. Cleaned it up and put it back on but when I went to adjust the idle it was revving really high. For some reason while it is in park the choke will not stay open after I give it gas. I can manually adjust the choke back and forth but it just doesn't ever return to open. I'm assuming I messed something up on the reassembly, but I can't see what it is. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Before After throttling.

Carburetor rebuilding is not a DIY job in any way. You not only need chemicals that you don't have access to but to properly set one up is a trade in itself. I suggest you simply order a reman and trade yours in. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I didn't actually rebuild anything, I just took the carb off and cleaned the blades with carb cleaner.

Looks nice. Been awhile since I have seen an 1850. I can't remember if there is a vacuum port on the back side of the throttle plate for you to connect your power brake booster vacuum hose. There should be another vacuum port on the front under the fuel bowl that is manifold vacuum and the one on the side of the front metering block for ported vacuum. Most people run their vacuum advance vacuum line on the ported vacuum connection and cap off the manifold connection. Does this have a mechanical or electric choke? If the choke doesn't open, it won't unload the fast idle tang when you bump the throttle. If it is electrical, make sure you have voltage when the engine is running on the wire that connects to the choke cover. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

HT is correct it takes years of work and tons of knowledge to do carbs . After 40+ years I can rebuild a Holly blindfolded as im sure HT and several other techs on this site can. BUT I also know that you have to start somewhere. Tinker with your carb , take notes and pics. If you screw it up beyond hope , then you can either have a pro go thru it or buy the reman. Here is some tips ....GOOD LUCK. . . http://www.jegs.com/...510/510-0-80457S.pdf . . LIFE'S SHORT GO FISH

Hey guys, just wanted to follow up. Had a friend help me out and we found the choke was not getting power so we followed the wire back to where it came lose and reconnected it. Not sure if it's normal, but the previous owner had it going to the fusebox inside the car. He also told me I should look into getting a Edelbrock 4 barrel (i think) carb as it is better suited for the 350 engine. Thanks for all the help, I really dig this site and I'm sure I'll be back with more ?'s.

The edelbrock carb is a great carb. Ive installed several on various applications . However the Holley is more than capable for your use . The edelbrock is easier to set up and tune (re-jet) if needed. LIFE'S SHORT GO FISH
