My exhaust pipe has come completely away from the rear silencer, and I was wondering if a tub of exhaust putty (ala http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/...AD&pcode=AGLGTP2) and some heat proof tape would offer a cheap temporary fix? Does anyone know how good this stuff is, I figure if I use the tape to bear the weight of the join it might hold together for a few months till I'm finished with the car. (The car - a Mk2 Golf - is worth less than a new exhaust and I don't know anyone who has a welder)

The patch stuff I've used had been very temporary. If from rust best to replace. If some clean metal it might work to weld or braise. T

Hey there, thanks for the response. It is pretty rusty, which is why it was weak, but the break was caused by a rock boucing up from the road. All I really want is a temporary (2 month) fix to stop it sounding like a 1940's farm tractor. I even thought of cutting the ends off a drinks can and using that to bridge the gap between the silencer and the exhaust pipe, then covering it all in lots of putty and heatproof tape. Quick and dirty is no problem, in case you couldn't tell. Any ideas anyone?

With rust, an inside short pipe and clamps if possible will work better. T

Yeah, you were right. It didn't hold for very long (about 5 miles) On the bright side it didn't cost much and it gave the guy at the exhaust centre a good laugh when he lifted it up!

A trick to test pipes is to take channel lock type pliers and squeeze on the pipe. a good one won't bend in with reasonalble force. The repair is new stuff and about everything temporary is just that. Damn packaging on these products used to say a permanant repair -- Ha -- I guess 5 miles is permanant T
