Hydrolock Help!!!

So, yesterday it was raining like crazy. I have a cold air intake on my 3, which makes me worried whenever it rains (not often in Arizona). I got stuck in traffic in a construction zone where the road was flooded about a foot deep. I should have just shut the car off and pushed through. Should have but didnt. Ended up stalling out and having to push through anyways. By the way I was only going like 10 mph which I think it a good thing. I got the car towed home and thought to just let it sit and not try and start it.

Today, I changed the oil and pulled the spark plugs. I turned the ignition with the plugs out and water shot out of all 4 holes making what could be a nice fountain in front of my house (already thinking of new uses for my *hopefully not* ruined car.)

So... I put the plugs back in and tried to start it up. Sounded like it wanted to, but it didn't start. Then it stopped trying. In the meantime my battery also died on me I pulled the plugs again and they were wet. Bought new plugs and battery just now. Turned the ignition again and more water shot out. Now im letting it dry out with no plugs in (a full day maybe?)


So I am wondering... is the fact that the water is shooting out a good sign? (I read somewhere that it is...) Does that mean at least my pistons move? Or does it sound like something is horribly wrong? Feel free to ask questions. I just am hoping the car starts tomorrow and that I dont have a broken rod or something. Im not even sure what that means, I just read it online :/

Pulling the plugs out and cranking it was a good idea. The intake manifold may be full of water though. You might have to take the throttle body off and suck the water out from the bottom of the intake.

Thanks for the advice. I did remove the throttle body but dont see any water in the manifold. Would you suggest removing the manifold? Also, I can see some water at the bottom of the holes the spark plugs came out of. Is there a method to drain or remove the water that you know of? I was thinking some sort of turkey baster could suck it out bit by bit?

Simply rotating the engine with the plugs out will completely empty the cylinders. This one seems to be pulling in more water from somewhere.

So, you were right about the manifold, it was flooded. Let everything air out and dry for a couple hours, reassembled with the new plugs and...

it started right up!!!!!

Had some white smoke coming out the muffler, but I let it run for 10 minutes until it cleared up. Running smooth and quiet so I think I am in the clear.

Thanks a ton for the help everyone! If I hadn't gotten the water out of the manifold, I would have just re-waterlocked myself and ruined my new plugs while at it.

:) So pumped! I feel like I got a brand new car haha.

Wow - you lucked out. If engine was at speed could have done serious damage. Now check that oil isn't contaminated or shows signs of water or too full if it takes changing more than once,
