2007 infiniti g35x 150k

Hello everyone l decided to make a post here after seeing that you guys seem to really known your stuff. So here goes nothing

I guess this will be my first detailed post. Little backstory for you guys, I bought this 2007 g35x sedan in March from Philly. It was super clean had no issues and I loved it. Still do but my recent discovery has definitely put a damper on that love.

A month ago I started to have cooling issues that I couldn't track down. It first started with bubbles in the coolant reservoir so I thought the worse and assumed it was the head gaskets (scary) did a block test and was happy to see it wasn't my issue.

So next I decided to do some research and found that sometimes a radiator cap would cause a bubbling issue due to it not holding pressure anymore so I swapped that and all was good for a week or so.

Fast forward and I'm having the same issues and now I'm even more aggravated so I decided to check the lower radiator hose after a drive and long behold the [censored] hose is cold and the upper is like extremely hot. So now I'm like great, it's the thermostat that's sticking and this shouldn't be to much effort to change it.

And this is where things went from optimistic to just downright horrible.

I went past infiniti to grab an oem thermostat and a gasket and went home to remove the thermostat that's when the horror arrived.

At first glance I really thought the thermostat that was removed from the car was r thermostat for a vq35de but upon further inspection... That IS A HOLE THAT WAS DRILLED INTO THE THERMOSTAT THAT WAS DRILLED INTO THE ENGINE BLOCK BEHIND THE THERMOSTAT. 😡

Why drill a hole? Why drill a hole and then drill into the block itself? I did more looking and then found out why.

It looks and felt as though the hole where the screw goes was broken so they used another bolt to secure the thermostat to the block. I also found out that the bolts they were using to secure the thermostat was the wrong size and were being secured by more rtv. I'm being annoyed with all this stuff and I'm trying to process how to fix this situation because besides this issue the car has no issues whatsoever.

Thanks for reading my post of frustration and hopefully someone can chime in and help me out a bit

Images would help but I'm trying to figure out how to upload. Thanks in advance

I'm not real clear on what the situation is.

Can you get some close up pictures of the situation?

Pics? Needed for this but a pest to post pics here? Even IDK what always will work. Try copy/paste from another spot to here. Site will always (most folks) say ''Error 504" doesn't mean it didn't post, come back see if there or not?
Links to pics OK if they are YOUR's not another forum or site with it's own interests such as selling stuff. Stinks - just keep trying it's both a snag here and what device you are using, Tom

Don't know if this is permitted but here's my thread on a g35 site that has all the info and pictures.

No, it is not allowed..... link deleted

I'm not sure what it is that I'm looking at here but I do see tons of corrosion.

I'm afraid that if repair is even possible here, it's not something you will do yourself. You need a highly skilled mechanic to look at this for possible solutions.

On another subject, you haven't ruled out a head gasket as yet. Those chemical tests are inconclusive at best. It appears this car has a long history of overheating and that is a big problem.
Another concern is did some fool load this thing up with some sort of sealer trying to stop the leaks. That would have likely destroyed your radiator and heater core.

See if a reliable repair is even possible for the thermostat housing and you can go from there.

Re: Looking for advice Sign In

Yeah I'm trying to do a better job with the photos. Not the best ones.

Car has no history with overheating, this issue arised about a month ago. Drove flawlessly for about 4 months before the issues started.

Radiator was flushed twice and upon flushing nothing seemed out of the ordinary besides old coolant.

I'm pretty handy with cars but with the lack of space it'll definitely have to go to a shop in my opinion. Radiator and cooling fans are in the way, was going to remove them but ac condenser is built-in to the radiator so it'll have to be evacuated as well.

First pic that shows both plastics and aluminum with plastic or rubber parts around. That's just plain hotter than parts on an engine should be exposed to. As HT just suggested to be looking now for head gasket like problems not so sure if even proven there's not more.
Didn't we say this can't take heat like that? That's what happens - yuk and not good,

OK, I saw the other pictures before I deleted the link that wasn't allowed.

You have a serious mess now. This is going to take a highly skilled machinist to repair this if it can be done at all. He may have to aluminum weld the broken areas and then re-machine it.

You may be looking at getting a different engine to resolve this.

Re: Looking for advice Sign In

Yeah I'm heading to the shop to speak a well known mechanic in the area. If I need a new engine i will grab one and put it in myself. I've done it before on my previous g35 that failed due to oil consumption issues.

I've gotten a few different ideas but none that can be done without removing the front end because of the radiator and sadly the radiator has the condenser attached to it and it's definitely in the way.
