Lost marks when removing rack and pinion assembly Sign In

While removing the old rack and pinion assembly on my fiance's 06 nissan sentra My marks for transfering to the new assembly got rubbed off as well as a little plastic piece with a tab that attached to my stearing collum broke and I am not sure if I need to replace it or if it will run with out?
The question is how do I make sure when I put my new assembly back in it goes in properly aligned?

Visually align the wheels to straight ahead position the best you can by looking down the side of the tire or rotor and aligning it with the outside edge of the rear tire. Then drop the steering column coupler on with the steering wheel centered. You may end up off by a tooth and have to move it a second time. Depends how good your eye is.

Yes, I would do as Hammer Time suggested as long as your steering wheel did not turn independently once it was disconnected. If it did it would be very like you could pull the clock spring in the steering column to far and brake it. Unforchently there is really no way to reset these if you have lost orientation. Best of luck.
