I have a 1989 Nissan hardbody pickup 3.0 v6 with about 200,000 miles on body and supposedly 40-50k on motor. Don't know exact motor mileage. The truck had been sitting for about a year, Its running but only by patting the gas but it cuts right back off when I let off, We narrowed it down to a fuel issue because when fuel is poured into the throttle body it will idle perfect until the fuel is burned off. It has a new throttle body, fuel pump, fuel filter, gas lines, gas tank, and orings on both injectors. I've also swapped out the injectors multiple times with some extras that came with the truck and no luck. This last time it caught on fire it came out of the valve cover vent when it backfired. I also know the timing is off. I have just run out of stuff to replace and am out of ideas.

? When you say "new" do you mean new or from another vehicle? Why do you "KNOW" timing is off and leave it that way? In general it would only be "off" if you moved it from where it was last set properly. Include valve timing in your checks - worn parts. Perhaps pretty excessive vacuum leaks? Sorry - all questions for things to check as good now. Fuel pressure now available? Are you sure? It works with a prime of fuel if excessive pouring of fuel down a throttle body can and will flood out to a backfire up to even getting into crankcase so suggest you use something else for that than raw fuel perhaps carb cleaner spray would be safer than making fires while finding the real fault, T

Fuel pump is new, throttle body is off another vehicle. I'm gonna fix the timing next time I work on it, and I checked vacuum leaks by spraying starter fluid around the intake to make sure it didn't rev up. But after I do the timing I'm going to reply back to this thread again, every other post I found online was saying smoke or gas fumes was coming out of the valve cover vent but never fire , but I really appreciate all the help. This is a really cool thread.

DO NOT USE STARTING FLUID TO LOOK FOR VACUUM LEAKS! ANY STRAY SPARK YOU'LL HAVE A FLASH FIRE - VERY DANGEROUS. IF USING THAT AS PRIMER PUT ALL AIR CLEANER PARTS BACK ON AS THOSE ARE SPARK ARRESTING. What is this vent in a valve cover? There isn't one? If something was removed for a check fine put it back on. If totally missing get that right. Fumes from valve cover(s) are crankcase fumes to be burned in throttle body via the PCV system NOT vented out in the air. It must do this properly. Back - If need be use the brand Brakleen for finding vacuum leaks. It's marked (or was) not flammable (read that on the container to verify that) meaning it would stall an engine if it hit a leak. Other types are flammable might raise or lower idle but you've had enough fires. You could even just spray water AYOR as if on the wrong electrical parts or something too hot risk cracking things. If engine isn't running properly all electric items working and hooked up and all vacuum leaks eliminated timing checks could be way off. Said it doesn't change itself from where it was last right without something broken or someone changing it for some other reason. One more for now - check oil for fuel odor and if it's too high? It could be fuel is way too much thinning oil not that much and it's not a good lubricant up to abrasive and will wreck a good engine. That and then it too and the crankcase fumes are very flammable but shouldn't be leaking out crankcase fumes so if so it's still not together properly or hope not could have way too much blow-by (worn engine issue usually) that PCV can't overcome that, T

Timing? Do you mean ignition timing or valve timing? You won't be able to adjust the ignition timing unless the engine is idling. If the engine runs fine as long as you are spraying it, more than likely the valve timing is good. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

OP stated in first post "> This last time it caught on fire it came out of the valve cover vent when it backfired.<" ? IDK? How much of that wildly flammable stuff but bet almost anything could backfire if too much? Why OUT of valve cover? It's sealed or should be? Lost a bit DS - what am I missing with this? T

Why are you messing with the timing at all. Unless somebody changed it, it should be fine. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
