Nissan Pickup Wiring/Starter Problem Sign In

1990 Nissan Pickup - 6cyl - 2wd
No power to the starter solenoid wire.
I have power to the oil sensor wire that appears to run along the harness with the solenoid wire.

Here is what I’ve done so far:
Test Battery – ok
Tested Starter – ok
Purchased 1-2 3~5 resistor and tried in every resistor on the firewall.
Purchased and replaced the resistor the oil sensor and solenoid runs into directly.
Testing key/ignition assembly with meter. 4 hot wires and 2 wires become hot when the key is turned to engage starter (12.x v)

Tested wire with a meter with the clutch pushed in for all the permutations above.

lookin for suggestions before I tear into the wiring harness further.

Consider myself a fair shad tree mechanic but this one is kicking my butt.

Re: Nissan Pickup Wiring/Starter Problem Sign In

According to my info ,there should be two hot all time wires at switch both are blk/yel. When key is turned to start the blk/pin wire should be hot. check this wire at soleniod .should,, be hot there also. if not look for open in wire.

Thanks re-tired...wish I was working on a fishing boat instead of this truck.

The black/yellow wire is hot when the key is turned over.

What do you mean "open wire"? one that is cut in two?

Re: Nissan Pickup Wiring/Starter Problem Sign In

The blk/pink wire is the one that is important. It should be hot (12v) when key is turned to start. By open I mean cut , burned in two , chaffed . Anything that stops the flow of currernt.

Re: Nissan Pickup Wiring/Starter Problem Sign In

I can't find a black/pink wire coming out of the ignition. Running from the resistor on the fender there is a black/pink wire to the cylinoid but it changes colors coming out of the resistor.

Moving clockwise from 9 on the ignition.key switch it has these wires red/white, black/yellow, black/white, black/green and solid blue.
when the key is turned on and the lights on the dash come on the red/white is 12v, black/yellow is off, black/white is 12v, black/green is .06v and the solid blue is 12v.

When the key is turned over further to engage the starter the black/yellow and black/green go to 12v.

Any thoughts?

Thanks again for the help.

All the diagrams I have access too show a blk/pink sol wire for a 6 cyl pickup from 1989 thru 1991. Perhaps another tech has better info. Mines a little dated.

There are no resisters in the starter circuit.

Re: Nissan Pickup Wiring/Starter Problem Sign In

Sorry, relays not resistors they all says 1--2 3--x--5

I've tried changing the starter, main, check and all other relays mounted on the fender.
The oil sensor wire coming in/out of the relays is working fine.
The black/pink wire running to the solanoid just isn't getting power.

Thanks for help.

Re: Nissan Pickup Wiring/Starter Problem Sign In

The clutch switch supplies trigger ground for the interlock relay. The Interlock relay should have power on both black with yellow wires at the relay with the key in "start" position. The clutch switch will send ground on the light green wire to energize the relay.

Re: Nissan Pickup Wiring/Starter Problem Sign In

Well in my next life I plan to be a real mechanic that knows how to read wiring diagrams.

Turned out to be the clutch switch just like you suggested. I think a screw fell out of it or something.

We’ll I’m off to buy 4 rolls of electrical tape to put my wiring harness back together.

I’ve learned my lesson…wouldn’t even consider changing out the dancing hula girl on the dash without first consulting this forum.

Thanks for help men!

Tested wire with a meter with the clutch pushed in for all the permutations above.

THanks HT . I had assumed (you know what happens when you do that) That he had tested the clutch sw.

BrokenWind: If just holding wires up and out of harms way electrical tape is great. No joke - stuff varies wildly in quality so pick something like Scotch 33 or 700 which is both stretchy and tolerates wild temp extremes. Home centers always have it and usually quality wire ties. Auto parts stores should have the plastic snake stuff which is hose with a slice in it if you want to go that way.

Glad you found it. Part of Murphy's Law is that it will be the last thing you check after arduous testing to find something silly,

I did test all the components with the clutch depressed. You have to see it. The switch is mounted to the fire wall, the metal clutch pad rod has a hole in it that allows the switch to pass clean through. Something is probably supposed to go into that hole.

Re: Nissan Pickup Wiring/Starter Problem Sign In

Its actually quite common . You would be suprised how many people miss this ,including some mechanics. As you discovered if you dont test the actual switch with your meter you can miss it. It's a small rubber button . NAPA may carry it , otherwise the dealer. Thanks again for letting us know the outcome.
