OILY FILM/RESIDUE

I have a 2007 GMC Yukon XL, 5.3 L engine, 120k miles. When driving at high speeds 70-80 for long distances I get an oily fil, on the back of the vehicle. It normally takes about 4-5 trips from GA to WV to use 1 qt of oil which I am assuming is where this film comes from. In normal usage the vehicle does not use oil and it doesn't smoke. How do I find out if this engine has a PCV or CCV(?) I thought that may be the problem. Thanks in advance.

Great thanks, It has that engine that changes from 4 to 8 cylinders as needed, so I wasn't sure if it was changed.

A PCV valve isn't going to cause oil burning. ok, So since the engine is not smoking is this possibly the problem, that the pcv system is not working and therefore the oily film is whats not being burnt off by the pcv system?

consuming excess oil would likely cause some codes to appear- ie. rich, cat efficiency, or o2 issues. your are not loosing any fluids? oil consumption is x qts per 1000? possible its some road deposits, environment etc.... kepp eye on oil use, other fluids, if worried - check plugs appearance, scan for ft's, look at cat efficiency (02 sensors), that AFM is a problematic system....

Just thoughts on this mostly: How far is your round trip to use/lose 1 Qt. of oil? At HWY speed several would use more in engine just normally to a point. Already asked how many miles per Qt? IMO 1 in 1,000+ miles probably isn't enough to show much evidence. If engine is ''burning it'' I would think tail-pipe would show evidence if seen as residue on vehicle but placement of tail-pipes is such that not much comes back towards the vehicle well thought of. Is that original location or messed with? I'd also take a good look for leaks with it overhead as well. If dripping one drop in a 1,00- feet X 1,000 miles there goes your quart! If burning right off a hot pipe not enough to see it and might not at lower speed = cooler pipes. Other is what oil type, viscosity and brand are you using? It totally matters. No joking but have used synthetics since it only came in a metal punch can and have since! No equal out there and more specify it, T

I have never thought an engine using oil is normal? Maybe I miss understood. I am using the oil at approximately 1600 miles (hwy) per qt. If I am driving around town, I am not using oil. I will check the pipes, its an 07 so I'm not sure if they are original or not. I bought it used.

You have 120,000+ miles, drive HWY at up to 80MPH for 1,600 miles 1 qt is hard to say isn't within normal for just what can get by rings and burn. Oil itself slowly loses its original properties/rating which is why you also change it on schedule, more often with severe use which is about everyone* Seeing it I don't understand on the vehicle isn't so normal. Always worth paying attention. At some point quit relying on devices on vehicles to tell you when to check things oil, coolant, tire pressure and a whole list and learn how to do it yourself for a trip especially. Know when one fluid or something is low if it's normal or not. Ex: One tire needs air now and then and the others don't. Not normal. Anyone and their regular vehicle need to be team players with care and check. At some point carry extra oil, fluids you use or might - no joke a spare wiper blade and so on. * Read owner's manual for service intervals and note what normal driving conditions are vs "severe." Severe is historically listed as hot or cold weather, stop and go driving, extended idling, towing, dusty conditions and a whole list. You'd be shocked at what is considered severe as said, T That I'd go look for why

that AFM by design uses more oil.... check owners manual... but I can not see a film as I imagine without some issues with exhaust gasses being seen by sensors.... maybe I an thinking picturing it wrong.
