Oil Light - 1996 Sebring

Car info: 1996 Sebring Convertible V6 Engine 135k miles on it I bought the car about 2 months ago, so I don't know it's history. Just recently (about a week or so) the oil light started coming on the dash. I notice that it's only lighting up when I'm idling at a light or something. Once I get my foot back on the gas, the light goes off. I took it in for an oil change, hoping that would help, but sadly the light is still coming on (if not more so now). I first noticed the light on Saturday, and it did not come on everytime I stopped. Today while I was out, it seems that everytime I stop the car the light is coming on. I really don't know what I should be looking for, but I'm hoping that coming here will find me some good advice. Thanks to everyone in advance for any info you can give me.

When a oil light starts coming on there is sadly no good news, could be oilpump/or oil sending unit, but considering the year/not so much the mileage the engine could be in need of an overhaul, best way to be sure is to find a shop that will perform a oil pressure test

You need a mechanical gauge installed and have the oil pressure checked. If oil pressure stays up with the mechanical gauge, replace the oil sending unit. If it drops with the manual gauge installed, the oil pump or engine bearings will be the problem. Being way2old is why I need help from younger minds

I never did like those (idiot lights) by the time the thing came on there was already engine damage

Some thoughts on this. sametc: I suspect with testing you'll find the bearings are the fault for whatever reason along its life. What is this car for? Just a fun weekend cruiser or do you count on this for everyday use? It matters. If just wear and otherwise running well, sounding well there is some hope for continued life before a big expense. If wear, you will probably notice the light doesn't come on so much until engine is warmed up and may even go out at those stops if you just put it in neutral - check that. If so you could buy an unknown amount of time by using a different oil. Perhaps a 15w-40 or 20w-50 (in that area) of a synthetic might just stop the problem which will only get worse if left alone and you could just enjoy the car for quite a while still. Noted was that you just got the car and it didn't do this right away. That suggests prior owner may have covered it with higher viscosity oil and when you changed it - probably back to OE suggested viscosity it got worse. Good luck with it, T
