Piston Rings only?

Hello, all. I've been browsing for used cars and came across a 1989 Chrysler Lebaron with a 2.2 engine. long story short, I talked to the seller and he said the only mechanical problem the car hadwas that the piston rings were needing a replacement and that is all. The seller then said that because of the piston rings that the engine "hesitates." No oil leaks. No burning through oil profusely. Mainly what I'm curious to ask is if there is anything wrong with the piston rings, what sort of ways are there telling to let the driver know exactly? Like certain engine noises etc? Or could it be another problem altogether?

THAT'S ALL???????? What's that supposed to mean. Bad rings means junk engine. How is that a small problem? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I assumed it was a good deal but too good of a deal for the price of the car. Selling for $900. Kelly blue book value is 1600 for that certain car's criteria. Except the engine. I'm no mechanic. So pretty soon the engine would need to be replaced?

I have no idea what is really wrong with your engine but if he is admitting to bad rings, you can bet it's probably a lot worse. Just the rings is enough to send it to the junkyard. Believe me, the car is not worth $1600. Maybe $600 if it had a real good engine which that one does not.

Thank you, Hammer Time. It would seem like an extended project to fix up that car. Time and money are two things I can not waste right now. True. That's unfortunate to hear. It's not the end of my constant search for strong running car though. Ya'll might see my name in newer posts more often. For I do not personally know any mechanics. the factors underlining bad rings would be what exactly?

Try to find a car someone is getting ready to trade. They won't be offered much from the dealer and those are usually the best deals.
