Please help a Newbie with engine troubles Sign In

Hello, I have a 1992 Geo Prizm. It has been running great up until today. Without notice the engine started vibrating roughly when I was standing still. I made it to the store but right as I pulled into my parking spot the engine just shut off. Each time I try to start the car and put it into drive the engine seems to struggle a lot and shuts off. The car does run when I leave my foot on the gas but as soon as I would stop the engine would shut off. The engine runs fine sometimes when it is in neutral but other times it just seems to vibrate and shutoff. I have no idea what could be causing this problem and I have not money to get it professionally fixed so any tips or info I could get here would be very much appreciated! Thanks for your time!

Greg

The checks you need to do first are:
Make sure the timing marks are correct, if the timimg belt is old and stretched the engine could have jumped time.
Check fuel pressure with a guage.
Check secondary ignition parts; cap, rotor, plugs, wires.
It is either mechanical, fuel system, ignition system, a faulty sensor, or a combination of the above.
Also, check the charging system. If you have a running voltage of 14-14.7 volts at the battery, the alternator is ok.
