Hello All,

Crazy thing happened, well not really.
I was just about to re-ring my little 2.2 Ln2 4 Cylinder 134cui. engine in my 1998 s10 (rwd) pickup when I noticed that the Haynes book stated that the END GAP 0.010 to .020. for #1; #2 compression rings.

So, I put my brand new Sealed Power Premium (E-531K) rings inside the cylinders and applied my new feeler gage (OEM brand) and I was able to pull a full 0.025 through the darn gap on #2 scrapper ring.

What to do??????

Is Haynes right with the information?
Is the gap of the new rings too much?
Can I use the new rings with such a gap?
Could I buy new .10 over rings for the #2 position???

IMO by the time an engine needs rings it's all over for that one. Did you measure the taper of cylinder walls?

The machine shop worked the block for me (Eddies Valve Grinding, Sayerville, NJ).

Eddie said it was all still standard size, I got the engine and transmission out of a junk yard; using it as a rebuild for my "Daily Driver".

I just wanted to run the "end Gap" ring size by a couple of people and get a feel for what sort of tolerances would be acceptable.
Plus, I wanted to check on the information that is in the Haynes Book for the 98-03 s10 truck with the 2.2 4 cyl.

I guess if anything a slightly larger "end gap" to ring(s) is better than too small. This should have all been done by the machine shop if you had the block worked on/re-machined or whatever,

Hey Tom what's up???? good to hear from ya.

I was thinking the same thing and wanted to get some feedback as well as some confirmation the
the information in the Haynes manual for this truck is correct (Can't be too sure).

If you have a chilton manual for this truck could you check the data on the ring gap for me, if ya got it.....thanks....

I don't but somebody here will. Been ages but sure studied all that good stuff back when. You put the gaps for rings in 1/3 spacing away so there isn't a straight line of gaps.

Some blow-by will happen and shouldn't be excessive. If a ring didn't have some gap I'm not so sure if one could bind up with heat when warmed up so it's critical for sure.

Good luck with it,

T
