Sign In Greetings and thanks for looking! I have a 2003 Toyota Rav 4 with a bum engine. Apparently it suffered damage from a lack of coolant and overheated. I am not very knowledgable when it comes to cars, but do have the ability to purchase a replacement engine and have it installed for $3500 approximately. The new engine would have 49K miles. The old one had 140K. It seems like a better deal to go ahead and replace the engine rather than buy a new car. Am I missing anything with unintended consequences? What would you do if you were me? Sign In Buying a used engine is always a risk but the mileage is pretty low on that one. The price seems a bit steep for a used engine though. Sign In Would a remanufacture be better than a regular one? The 49K engine is $2200 - the installation would be around $1200 according to one local shop. It's a rebuilt engine.
