Saturn engine noise

2007 Saturn Vue, 3.5 Honda engine, 120,000 miles - when first starting in morning car has a ticking or knocking noise. After it warms to operating temp it runs great, quiet, great fuel mileage, peppy. That noise concerns me tho. It does not do it every morning but most. Is there something I can add to eliminate this problem?

Can you tell if it's from engine or an accessory? This could be a sludge problem in that it goes away warmed up. What's the oil change history? If that's in the cards just change the oil much more often and it might clean itself up or not. Additives to speed the clean up can cause problems. If sludge it's neglect and may not snap out of it You can get a clue on sludge sometimes by just looking in oil fill cap or sometimes on the dipstick. Other is some accessory and if belt is taken off for a test and it's silent (run just for the test not too long) find which by spinning them in hand can find which one, T
