I have a 2000 Mercury Sable 24 Valve engine that keeps shaking when the weather is very cold. When I start up the car during cold weather the car is fine until the RPMs go below 1000, at which point the car starts shaking a lot, the light becomes dim and at times the car dies. The only way the car warms up and doesn't die is if I give it some gas and apt the RPMs to 2000. I went to a mechanic and they run a test on the whole car and found nothing. Then I went to the dealer and their recommendation was to exchange two-house vacum which I did exchange. The situation is still the same and now to top it off, the engine light is on. I have a feeling that not all of the cyliners are running. Does anyone have any advice for this kind of problem? Any feedback would be appeciated.

I'd get the code reading and it may just pin down which cylinder to chase down the problem - spark or fuel or to be found still, T
