I have a 1997 vow polo with about 250,000km on it. When I start it (not always) it starts fine but when I press the gas it sputters and almost stalls until the rpm's get up (approximately above 2000). It then stops doing this and runs fine once it starts to warm up. It doesn't need to get all the way warm, just as soon as the temp gauge is moving up it seems to be fine again. Any suggestions?

This vehicle not sold to the US where it is based still basics apply.
250,000KM = about 155,000 miles. Limited work on vehicles sold only to other countries but noted smaller displacements more common that naturally work a bit harder. That's now higher side for kilometers for assorted issues.
Don't know this car at all really but anything burning fuel wants MORE of it when cold. Being a 1997 you should have ability to read codes for what "computer" sees to help find why this one doesn't like being cold.
The items sensing engine temp are frequently near the thermostat. Sensors that go into coolant for engine. May also be monitoring air temp coming in.
These items can be checked that they do sense temp with changing ohms at cold and different when warm to hot. I'd be making sure all is plugged in, wires look good then check them first and move on if they show they are working.
May only have one for fuel delivery and other for cooling fans don't confuse them,

I appreciate the input. I don't have easy access to equipment to read the codes. I am in Italy for work and the mechanics here are difficult to converse with, as well as a little shady to say the least. It seems to me it could be the IAC valve or like the choke not adjusting the mixture correctly when cold. I will try to see if I can find a code reader or someone who can hook it up to a computer to see what it says. The problem is it doesn't always do it.
I will keep trying, again thanks for the input

Choke? I couldn't be 100% sure but that means this is carbureted and didn't think anything was by 2006 except small engine machines - yardword items.
Understood and also know VW makes cars to a counties specifications or lack there of use the cheapest way to make the car. IDK - by 2006 this had codes to read can't believe anything but just maybe a diesel might have escaped computer controls.
If it's not delivering fuel properly when cold/first start up there are only so many items that control that. If needed find a VW dealer hate to say may not be so easy for shops to figure out or find a better one if you don't trust anyone language barrier or not you aren't going to make someone trying to help you real thrilled,

My mistake, it is fuel injected, I used the wrong term.

OK - It still needs someone to find out why just up to you to find the place and right person. It can't be an unheard of car or set up just because it's not sold to the US isn't that uncommon. Good luck with that hunt,
