Starter issue on 98 Nissan 200SX 1.6L

I just changed the alternator and battery yesterday and drove the car around for about 45 minutes to get my emissions checked and the guy turned the car off and then on again and then I drove around to the front office and parked for about 5 minutes and the car wouldn't start. The radio, horn, lights, dash lights, cig lighter, everything worked but you didn't hear anything from the engine, no click or anything at all. I let it sit overnight and it started right up. I was looking in the engine and it looks like I have to take off the whole intake manifold to gain access to the starter. Is there an easier way?

No the starter is accessed from below without removing the manifold. You will have to troubleshoot this when the failure is present to get it right. You will have to test for power arriving at the small wire at the starter while the key is held in "start" position. Don't just assume the starter is the problem. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I wanted to pull the starter and have it tested at the auto parts store, to be 100% sure. I do not see how to get to the top bolt from the bottom.

They can't tell you if it's bad or not. You have an intermittent problem. On the top bolt you have to see which direction it comes in from. If it comes in from the top, you should be able to access it under the air filter. If it comes in from the bottom, you have to use an extension that reaches past the end of the starter.

Standing at the front of the car the air filter is in a box on the right behind the battery. The starter is in the back of the engine about halfway down under the air intake manifold and the bolt heads are facing left. The top one is between the solenoid and engine somewhere. I just can't fit any tool up there from the bottom to get it.

You will likely have to use a swivel socket and an extension and slide it behind the solenoid.

Thank you so very much. The right set of extensions, ratchets with swivel heads and a swivel socket got me right to my bolt without me having to take anything out of the engine. Odd thing is one of the bolts extracts from the passenger side under the car and the other from the driver side top of the car. But again thank you for the advise on tools, it was just what I needed. Now to figure out where the ball bearing that i found when I drained the oil came from.

Yeah, I didn't think it was. Any ideas on what comes in contact with your oil that has bearings? Pea sized ones at that.

You got me. I don't know of anything that uses ball bearings inside there. Possibly inside the oil pump but I'm not sure about that.
