Timing Issue 4.3 V6

2000 Chevy Astro Van 4.3 v6 170,000 miles Over the past few months the van began to develop a miss, I went through and replaced the cap, plugs, wires, rotor, ignition module, coil. Still, nothing, same old miss and terrible gas milage. So I decided to look into the timing of the motor, heres my question. When I align the marks on the main crank pulley and the timing cover, the distributer is pointing at the number 4 spark plug, its supposed to point at number one isnt it? I took an adjustable wrench, put at the base of the distributer and bent the bracket that holds the distributer so its turned about 3 or 4 degress clockwise, and now the van runs great, is getting great gas mileage and has tons of power. So where is the distributer supposed to point at top dead center? If it really is supposed to be pointing at plug number one, how did me advancing the timing 3 degrees fix it? Timing chain? maybe?

I hate to rain on your parade but you didn't move the timing at all. All you did was throw the fuel injector synchronization off. Your going to need a Tech2 scan tool now to get it back in synch again. The engine uses a crank sensor so the timing is factory engineered and cannot be changed. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

well its running better now than it ever did before i messed with it, so if anything i made the fuel injector sync better, yet again I ask, where is the distributer supposed to point when the engine is at top dead center?

The distributor is set with the use of a scan tool that measures the amount of offset. You only have a 4 degree tolerance before it will put the check engine light on and set a P1345 code. You probably fixed the miss by just handling the plug and coil wires.
