2001 Escape 3.0 V6 2WD I have been chasing a rough idle for a couple weeks now. No CEL and no codes from the PCM. I can hear a "hiss" coming from the rear intake so now it is just a matter of locating its exact location (PCV, Brake Booster?). I have seen lots of opinions on both sides of the aisle about spraying carb cleaner back there (I do not have a propane torch or smoke machine to use instead, though I realize those are both probably safer) to catch a leak. Will carb cleaner be fine or am I risking my eyebrows? Visual inspection showed no collapsed lines so i am suspected a hairline crack or bad elbow. Notes: Idle worse with A/C running. In addition to the rough idle I get a hiccup and RPM loss when slowly accelerating through 40-50mph Already Done: Plugs, IAC, Fuel Filter all replaced, TB cleaned Any and all help would be much appreciated!

Carb cleaner will be fine. Just don't spray it at a spot that you are already seeing unexplained sparks like one other fool did here. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I'm surprised this hasn't triggered any trouble codes. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

? Rough idle and you can hear vacuum leaking. Why is that so hard to locate? Plain water would find that - just mist suspect area or if carb cleaner watch out for what you are spraying it. Kaboom if all wrong, T

No, you have to use something flammable so it will richen the mixture when drawn in through the leak. That's the only way the engine is going to respond.

If loud enough to hear it would stumble. Shouldn't really need anything but wiggle hoses or a finger (away from hazards) on a bad leak and it would change/stop maybe, T
