I have a problem with my car that nobody can fix.
Oil burning fast.
No oil leaks.
Revs up & down when idle/coming to a stop.
Oil light comes on for about 3 months then goes off).
No cold air or AC when yellow oil light on.
Bad emissions during service, needed oil change, air filter everytime.
New EGR valve fitted.
I have researched similar problems and the possible parts that keep popping up are:
-PCV - Positive Crankcase Ventilation
-MAF - Mass Air Flow
-Piston rings, valve guides or valve guide seals.
All in all it is all connected, this is th third time it has happened, and as soon as the yellow oil light goes off all the problems go away and I get my cold air/ AC back and engine doesn't sound rough anymore. People tell me these problems can't be connected but 3 times now.. it's no coincidence!
VW Polo, 2002, 1.4 engine, 83,000 miles.

Is this to say a LOW OIL PRESSURE warning light has been on or comes and goes for 3 MONTHS? For whatever the cause if that is real this engine has had it, worn out. In the course of that hot spots, oil sludge you could probably see thru oil filler cap on some or some on dipstick.
If it used that much oil how did anyone keep up with it without running it WAY too low? Bet not and engine is lucky to run at all,

Yellow oil warning lights mean that action is required such as oil level or pressure.
Mechanic says oil pressure is fine, just low oil as it burns a lot. Even with new oil and filter the light remained on.
When the yellow oil light comes on it stays on constantly for about 3 months. Doesn't matter if I do long journeys or short.
The dipstick has always been clean, showing nice looking oil. The filler cap however has has white/yellow sludge for the last month but apparently that might be moisture or something from an additive I added to clean the Cat.

? Yellow warnings are almost world universal for a warning to take care of ASAP and RED warning mean pull over or shut down right away.
Low oil level warnings would be amber/yellow and don't trust those to work and worse even the sensor can leak! Not sure any version of this car in exact form is sold to the US but doesn't matter much. You said you gulp oil and the poor thing if a cheap lawmower can't take that.
Changing oil AFTER the fact doesn't reverse the problem. High chance this wore engine bearings, pistons and rings and just at certain temps can behave just barely enough.
How did anyone check real oil pressure? It would have to be checked when known full, warmed up if safe to run it and with a gauge not the car's. Stone cold most might read a decent pressure and quickly lose it.
Big difference between a low oil level warning and low oil pressure. One if they worked is handy the other fatal to an engine - that's about it.
The yellow guck under oil cap sometimes can be normal? Some get condensation in crankcase and it ends up there, some don't.
All the thing you listed for oil consumption are age old for about any engine. Trouble is if you need those things you really are up for an overhaul. Oil consumption without seeing a leak is less common without seeing blue smoke out exhaust but a few can leak to ground only while running and escape finding them without a hard look.
Low oil level will cause low oil pressure. The 1 qt. or liter warning shouldn't be low enough for damage but you are using up oil so even if not from neglect or oil pump failure this is real trouble.
Note: Low oil "level" warnings are almost always too late or close. Staring at one for 3 months without finding out why right away was a mistake learned the hard way.
Do yourself a favor and make a habit of checking oil by dipstick frequently. Especially when older and uses any at all. Some of these engines only hold about 3 quarts so one low is more serious.
Beat on this. If you even park at an angle the oil all rushes to one side or end so there's even less available for the pump to pick up for lubing the engine constantly without interruption,
