Warped engine head = salvage ??? Sign In

My wife's car is a 2000 Ford Escort and today the head gasket blew. The engine head also warped. My mechanic is telling me that the entire engine must be swapped out, or I can junk the car. Why is it that you cannot just replace a warped aluminum head and keep going? He says if we do that then I'll have trouble very soon with the rest of the engine but I don't understand.

Actually, you can replace the head but the concerns are that first off, the new head would be very expensive to purchase and likely exceed the cost of a used motor. The other concern you have is that nobody knows just how hot the engine got and if it exceeded a certain point, there will also be piston and cylinder damage and you won't know that until it's torn down. If the mileage is high on the old engine, the risk becomes high also. The shop has to stand behind his work and it may not be worth the risk to him to repair the old engine.
