car turns off when at stop light Sign In

Hi everyone,
I have a Nissan sentra 1997. For the last one month it is having a problem. There has been one instant when it turned off when I was at a stop light, multiple other times it was close to turning off but did not actually turn off.
I took it to a mechanic and he told me that the TPS (throttle position senser) needs to be changed which is $250. I am not sure if that is the only problem with my car, I don't want to keep throwing money at an old car.

I live in a bike friendly city. I walk to work. I use my car for occasional grocery shopping.

Do you guys think I can use my car for occasional grocery shopping? what is the worst that can happen?
I live in a town of about 75000 people.

Get a code reading yourself and make sure it's leading to that. Gotta go right now will follow this. I'm shocked at that price but there's always something that shocks me like that.

Back later and I think you can do local driving but not too long like that as anything that messes the way the engine runs can and will harm converters adding insult to injury,

Thanks for your reply. I will try to search for "code reading" but I don't know how to do it.
The mechanic charged me $107 for "diagnosis" already. ( I had agreed to that price before the inspection).
He also told me that "some kind of cables" are also old and they might have to be replaced for additional cost. Also he said that fuel injector might have to be replaced (additional cost). So looks like I am looking at a lot of money.

I am hesitant to spend too much money on this old car. I mainly want to know if I can drive the car in the city, I am already not driving on highway.

jsm - just check a parts price for the TPS and was more like $61.

Many major parts outlets will read codes for free and I suggest getting that done for more info.

Hey - I don't care for a tech in biz who charged you to diagnose the car saying it "might" need more! What does that mean - they didn't check to know or what?

We don't have your car in front of us so go by the feel of what you are saying and asking.

What cables "might" need replacing? If you get charged for diagnosis it should be specific IMO,
