did my truck jump time???? Sign In

my truck is a 1996 chevy 3500 5.7 ltr. i was driving and it started to miss really bad then it died, all of the power cut off to everything, tried to start again it cranked and ran really bad and died again now i cant get it to crank anymore. i have 11.8 v to the coil is this enough? all my wires seem to be connected well. i called around to try and find a set of Noid lights and cant get any at my local auto parts store, is there another test to see if the injection system works fine. i have about 35 psi in fuel just changed the fuel filter. the fuel pump kicks on when i cycle the key on. i took the distributor off and had my brother crank it the rotor turns only when i help it a little, then it stops, i also looked inside the valve cover and the lifters seem to work when cranking, please help

Re: did my truck jump time???? Sign In

Sounds like you found your problem.
The rotor should always turn by it's self.
Maybe the rotor it's self is broke if not then the distributor gear is probably stripped.

Re: did my truck jump time???? Sign In

I do not. But you can just do a google search or if one of the other users on here (hammer time) chimes in he might have one for you.
A repair manual would be a good idea to have you know, There about $20-25 bucks at autoparts stores.

Re: did my truck jump time???? Sign In

one more question all of this says you only have to get close that you can time it after, my truck has a warning that states that the timing is set automatically not to try and adjust the timing is this going to affect the way i need to install?

Re: did my truck jump time???? Sign In

That's correct. You cannot change timing. Turning the distributor changes the synch between the cam sensor and the Cranks sensor and any more than 4 degrees off and it will run bad and put the check engine light on. It requires a professional scan tool to set it correctly. There is a PID in there called Cam Offset and it has to be adjusted to zero.

Re: did my truck jump time???? Sign In

Heres the same thing i posted but with some pics.
Hope this helps you out more then the last one.

A. Here is the procedure.
IMPORTANT: Rotate the number 1 cylinder to Top Dead Center (TDC) of the compression stroke. The engine front cover has 2 alignment tabs and the crankshaft balancer has 2 alignment marks (spaced 90° apart) which are used for positioning number 1 piston at Top Dead Center (TDC) . With the piston on the compression stroke and at top dead center, the crankshaft balancer alignment mark (1) must align with the engine front cover tab (2) and the crankshaft balancer alignment mark (4) must align with the engine front cover tab (3).
  1. Rotate the crankshaft balancer clockwise until the alignment marks on the crankshaft balancer are aligned with the tabs on the engine front cover and the number 1 piston is at top dead center of the compression stroke.
  1. Align white paint mark on the bottom stem of the distributor, and the pre-drilled indent hole in the bottom of the gear (3).
NOTE: The OBD II ignition system distributor driven gear and rotor may be installed in multiple positions. In order to avoid mistakes, mark the distributor on the following components in order to ensure the same mounting position upon reassembly:
    • The distributor driven gear
    • The distributor shaft
    • The rotor holes

Installing the driven gear 180 degrees out of alignment, or locating the rotor in the wrong holes, will cause a no-start condition. Premature engine wear or damage may result.
  1. With the gear in this position, the rotor segment should be positioned as shown for a V6 engine (1) or V8 engine (2).
    • The alignment will not be exact.
    • If the driven gear is installed incorrectly, the dimple will be approximately 180 degrees opposite of the rotor segment when the gear is installed in the distributor.
  2. Using a long screw driver, align the oil pump drive shaft to the drive tab of the distributor.
  1. Guide the distributor into the engine. Ensure that the spark plug towers are perpendicular to the centerline of the engine.
  1. Once the distributor is fully seated, the rotor segment should be aligned with the pointer cast into the distributor base.
    • This pointer may have a 6 cast into it, indicating that the distributor is to be used on a 6 cylinder engine or a 8 cast into it, indicating that the distributor is to be used on a 8 cylinder engine.
    • If the rotor segment does not come within a few degrees of the pointer, the gear mesh between the distributor and the camshaft may be off a tooth or more.
    • If this is the case, repeat the procedure again in order to achieve proper alignment.
  1. Install the distributor mounting clamp bolt. Tighten the distributor clamp bolt to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).
  2. Install the distributor cap.
  3. Install two NEW distributor cap screws. Tighten the screws to 2.4 N.m (21 lb in) .
  4. Install the electrical connector to the distributor.
  5. Install the spark plug wires to the distributor cap.
  6. Install the ignition coil wire. The wire must not touch anything like the dip stick. Rubbing will make a ground/short after time of use.
  7. For V-8 engines, connect a scan tool.
  8. Monitor the Camshaft Retard Offset value. Refer to Computers and Control Systems Camshaft Retard Offset Adjustment. IMPORTANT: If the Malfunction Indicator lamp is turned on after installing the distributor, and a DTC P1345 is found, the distributor has been installed incorrectly.
  9. Refer to Installation Procedure 2 for proper distributor installation.

Be a good idea to change the oil when you're done.

Re: did my truck jump time???? Sign In

Why, is it backfiring or anything? It probably is out of time. Make sure you have it up on TDC on the compression stroke.

Re: did my truck jump time???? Sign In

That's not what the instructions say to do. If you look inside that cap, the outside wire position doesn't align with the inside contact. You have to align it with the #1 in the diagram, not the number one wire.

Re: did my truck jump time???? Sign In

And that's what I said that you weren't supposed to do. The alignment doesn't match.
Use the diagram.

The coil uses battery voltage.

Re: did my truck jump time???? Sign In

If there's enough voltage to crank the engine over, there will be enough for the coil.
