engine backfiring Sign In

I have a 327 chevy motor that has started backfiring through the carb on cold startup. ok when warm or hot. Pushes oil smoke out through the carb. What's up James

Sticky choke? Out of adjustment Choke? Bad points or condenser (if not electrronic ignition)? Timing? Has it been tuned up recently?

High milage engine, could be low compression in one cylinder, worn lifters, timing chain/gears. sticking valves or lifters could cause backfiring and smoke issue.

Safe to say you'll need to diagnose the problem. More info would help. (Age and milage of engine, what it is used in,all cyl compression, vacuum readings and so on if possible)

Just my 2 cents, vinny

Re: engine backfiring Sign In

this engine only has about 5000 miles since complete overhaul. Compression is good, 160 to 180 in all cylinders. MSD ignition new wires, edelbrock carb, replaced the dist. cap, set timing and checked valves. everything ok. It only backfires when engine is cold. It also just started this the other day. I'm stumped. Have messed with small block chevys for 45 years and I have never had one do this. Car runs great. It is a 1934 Ford three window coupe and is maintained a lot better than anything else I own. The timing chain was replaced at last overhaul and the valves have the little rubber boots on the guides. I appreciate suggestions. James

Re: engine backfiring Sign In

Choke pull off probably not pulling offMad It must crack open once running and senses first intake manifold vacuum or it would flood it with gas,

Re: engine backfiring Sign In

thanks for trying but Edelbrock carbs do not have a choke pulloff. I think we found the problem. a bad MSD box. bypassed it and it seems to work ok. We'll see, huh. James
